General Motors produced this transmission but is sometimes also known as Hydramatic. 700R4 is one of the best overdrive transmissions built ever. This transmission was introduced as a supplement for the TH350 transmission in 1982, with the primary objective of increasing fuel economy. This transmission has a lower first gear ratio, which was perfect for reliability at low vehicle speeds, while the overdrive of 30 percent was a significant improvement in fuel economy. The design of this transmission was mainly aimed at improving fuel economy, and this was achieved through a range of changes, not the least of which was the overdrive capability of 30 percent.
