History of 700R4
The Turbo 700 came in the year 1982 as a response to fuel economy pressures and it was phased as the replacement for the TH350. It had lower-than-usual 3.06:1 first gear, and it was popular for off-the-line acceleration and off-road torque. TH700R4 is easy to find, either as a used component or a rebuilt unit. Moreover, it can be relatively easily retrofitted into earlier transmission applications.
In the year 1990, the transmission was renamed to 4L60. the naming was based on the features of the transmission. The 4 denoted that it is a 4-speed transmission, the L indicated that the transmission is longitudinally positioned and the 60 represented that the transmission can be used for applications up to 6000 lbs gross vehicle weight (GVW).

In 1993 the most vital change was done to 700R4 with the introduction of electronically controlled transmissions.

Construction of 700r4
The 700R4 case is a single piece made with cast aluminum. Its weight is 155 pounds and it is 23.4 inches long. It holds about 11 quarts of the transmission fluids. This transmission comes with a lower first gear ratio, which provided optimum results at low vehicle speeds, while the overdrive of 30 percent offered a significant improvement in fuel economy.
