An Overview Of The GM 6L90 Automatic Transmission
The Hydra-Matic 6L90, which has the production code “MYD” is basically a six-speed automatic transmission made by GM. This can be used in rear and rear-biased AWD (all-wheel-drive) vehicles that are equipped with a longitudinal powertrain orientation. This 6L90E transmission has been developed in-house by GM and it is a part of the 6LXX family. It has few advantages (electronically controlled 6-speed AMT and better fuel-saving) from its previous 5LXX family.
Talking about the modular design of this particular transmission, it has several variants that are rated for different torque levels to fulfill needs of various engines as well as applications. All iterations come with a similar unique output gearset configuration. This makes it possible for the vehicle to have a wide range of ratios than a traditional gearset AMT.
Modular Design
The modular design of the Hydra-Matic 6L90E revolves around the need for some common components/parts and manufacturing tooling for 4 distinctive size variants of the 6-speed family. All variants make use of 3 gearsets — a simple input gearset and 2 output gearset systems. One of the two is a compound gearset which has 3 pairs of 2 gears on the output carrier.
Performance Algorithm Braking
Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS) is present on some of premium applications. PAS is accurately able to assess how assertively the driver is making use of the engine output to figure out the correct engine speed to upshift or downshift.
Driver Shift Control
This salient feature permits the driver to shift the transmission similar to a clutch-less manual gearbox. Electronic safeguard devices prevent over-revving of the vehicle when an incorrect gear position is accidentally selected.
Advanced Control System
Research and advancements in transmission control systems allow them to exist reliably inside the transmission engine. Here, the temperature remains fairly constant when we tally it to a body-mounted module.
The 6L90E transmission’s transmission control module (TCM) assesses the transmission performance and takes care of the usual wear in components/parts such as clutch plates. This makes sure that the performance of the transmission remains consistent for the entire life of the transmission.
