Rebuilding a 4L60E With More Power and Durability
It was the year 1990 when the highly popular 700-R4 was redesigned and sold as the 4L60, with the ‘4’ in the name indicating the four-speed, ‘L’ meant the longitudinal setup (north or south), and ‘60’ meaning light-to-medium-duty task and 6k pounds of total vehicle weight. Even though the 700-R4 came with a fresh designation, the good ol’ drive-ability and shift balancing issues still existed. The expert engineers at GM came up with an idea to develop a computer-controlled 4L60 (generally referred to as 4L60E) based on the 700-R4.
The 4L60E arrived in the year 1993 with features like a precision shift that were never found in the traditional 700-R4/4L60 series. 4L60E consisted of a computer-controlled system that was basically a PCM (Powertrain Control Module). This system has the capacity to achieve control with the help of a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and other necessary sensors throughout the system, which also takes the engine into account. These sensors offer adequate feedback to make sure that the PCM is able to take charge of the control shifts, depending on the demand of the driver. The PCM can also join both the engine as well as the transmission to a place where both can operate in harmony. The popularity of the 4L60E is so high that you can also find various dealers selling Chevy 4l60e transmissions. This is not for every type of car owner, but for the ones who are enthusiasts and like to tweak the performance of the vehicle.
When you closely look into a 4L60, it does not appear much different than a 700-R4. When the 4L60 transformed over to the electronic control to become the ever-popular 4L60E, the main case was completely altered, and also some modifications were required for the valve body to facilitate the electronic control. Between the years 1993 to 1997, the 4L60E became a two-piece affair. It mainly consisted of the main case and a four-bolt extended compartment, useful for passenger car applications. It was the year 1996 when the 4L60E transformed into a removable six-bolt extended housing for some popular applications.
If you are not an experienced transmission builder, who has worked closely with the 4L60E series transmissions, it is a good idea to not get yourself involved in transmission rebuilding on your own. With that being said, you can certainly gather all the right tools and maybe execute the rebuilding successfully. However, the success rate of a Chevy 4l60E transmission isn’t exactly high. You can easily look online ti get it at the most affordable price.
