Overview On 4R70W Transmission

Initially introduced in 1992 for modular 4.6-liter engines in various Town Car models, these transmissions are an excellent choice for street performance with small block engines. Further, by 1994, these units had completely replaced the older AOD.

A predecessor to the AODE, the 4R70W is a Ford transmission. The AODE and the 4R70W are often interchangeably used while referring to one another. These transmissions were the improved versions of the AOD, which was the first overdrive transmission Ford made as a functional solution to the fuel efficiency issues. This is why people still opt for the 4r70w performance rebuild kit because of its efficiency and power.

Therefore, since the 70s, there have been regulations to improve air quality and fuel efficiency, which prompted the production of more efficient transmissions over the years.

FORD 4R70W Transmission

Car manufacturers started to build fuel-efficient cars in the 70s. While the decision was economical and environmentally friendly, it meant sacrificing the performance and speed of the vehicles. In 1980, Ford came up with its AOD, a four-speed automatic transmission. Even though the AOD was still new, it carried the features of the older design. It just had tiny additions but still had many core features as the older transmissions.

After that came the AODE in 1991. It was different from the AOD in many aspects, such as the new valve body, computer controls, torque controller, and front pump assembly.

The 4R70W comes with

* 4 Forward Speeds

* Rear-Wheel Drive

* 700 lb-ft torque rating

* Wide gear ratio

The biggest pro of 4R70W is the improved overdrive band. Another significant advantage of this transmission is its compatibility with many Ford vehicles without needing much work or modifications. The 4R70W can easily fit into various older vehicles and offer them the same efficiency and performance.

Conclusion

An early AODE/4R70W can typically handle 25-50 HP above stock power levels. However, the 4R70W performance kit should always be installed before engine modification takes place. However, try not to overload it since there is a limit to its torque and power. And keep in mind that just like any other transmission, the 4R70W still needs regular maintenance.
