The Ford Au(AOD) is a new concept of four-speed automatic transmission that is very well known to incorporate three different things, significantly enhancing the engine. They are:

* Split torque in third gear

Traditionally, the AOD had been highly unreliable, and it was also known to bop back and forth between drive and overdrive in traffic. However, the new AOD featured a complicated twin-input shaft system with outer shaft control, reverse, and first and second gear clutches via the torque converter. This unique system accommodated around 450HP or so before pieces started snapping. Moreover, a sturdier single shaft arrangement keeps the converter from locking up in Third and Fourth gears. This strategy made AOD effective up to the 600HP range.

The AOD is bolted to the engine by using an integral bell housing. Because Ford small-blocks used the same bell housing bolt pattern, the AOD will bolt directly to earlier Ford small-block engines. Don’t forget to measure the distance between your two top mounting bolts on the bell housing to be sure. If you install AOD in place of C4, it will involve moving the cross member back about 2 inches and drilling new holes for the transmission mount.
